how thin is your first coat over the top of the pre-shading?
I always end up obscuring my pre-shading unless the top colour is something extremely light... or its too thin and the pre-shading is too "in your face".
Like a heavy wash or ....?

That's truly amazing, Brent but from what I've learned talking to a couple of old US tankies here, once in the field they very quickly learned to chuck mud on the stars as otherwise they gave gerry a nice aiming point.
However, as you are the master of all things armour I'll leave that choice to you

Mi Mate,
I assume you're talking the change from pic 1 to pic 2.
Its drybrushed so its almost an empty brush. Its also more of a stippling action aimed at the center of the panels to blend the shade back. As you say you want a hint of it left but not hard edges. Drybrushing in the traditional sense of dragging the brush over the surface wont do it, itll just build up the paint of the edges and obsure detail without blending the shade. And you have to aim for layers/several passes. If you put enough paint on the brush to blend the shade out in one hit you'll kill it all off - like you mentioned.
Tis hard on brushes though. I have a seelction of crappy and different sized brushes just for this drybrush/stippling. I mentioned in another thread that I'd post my brushes - I should so you can see the tools required.
cheers
Brent

cheers brent - i' was trying to dry brush it which looks like my problem... i can do it OK with the airbrush but you cant use an airbrush for everything.

Excellent series of WIP shots.... Particularly impressed by the dark shading around seam lines and joins in pic 1.... I shall be doing this from now on...
