Bit of a rushed job but i think you can get the picture.
Its a lot easier on a resin building than a flat piece of balsa believe me !

Appologies for the bit of free banking advertisment in pic 1 !!!!

And just on the edges and knots ect when the bleached bone is not completely dry.

Obviously the same principle applies to whatever colour set you use...
dark to light with less and less on the brush each layer.

thin washes of black / dark brown etc can help redifine the grooves if
needed but I'd use a mix of your darkest paint, water and a flow enhancer
rather than ink..Ink gives a very glossy finish '

and varnish lifts out all the drybrushing even more !

Hope that makes sense !

Fantastic tutorial mousy, I will be trying out this afternoon.

You should charge Barclays advertising fees, you`d have to give a share to SD though for the use of his site

mousy, when you score and make knots do you use a scalpel or a pen? I used to use a pen, but now use the tools pictured below. I also like them for modelling and gluing, ideal for crevices in Daz. Also at the end of it you said varnish lifts out the drybrushing. What varnish do you use?

Cheers Carol

Just used the barclays pen in the pic ... the nib pushes the balsa in rather
than cuts it giving a deeper but stronger groove. Scalpels can cause it
to snap along the cut.. The rounder ends of your tools should work well.
the pen also gives the benefit of putting ink into the marks you make so
you can see what you have done etc.. See pic 1 above.

I'm not very careful about it and only put in the main grooves with a ruler
the rest is just letting your artistic nature flow.

The marks you can see in pic 1 that dont have black ink in were done with
the pen tip with the nib retracted in !! Why ? I dunna know it's art not science.
Just get some spare balsa and have a play about with various
tools and see what you get really. i had some good results on Balsa
beams ( strips that i used for supports and posts etc )
by running a needle file down the corners to round them off but very
unevenly !

Its the dry brushing that really makes all the marks you have made
come to life ! So I guess you wont know what works for you until
you have a few different bits painted up!

Varnish i use is Daler and Rowney Brush on Gloss and then their Matt varnish.
From an art shop. £5 a bottle but lasts long enough. At least 24hrs between
coats and make sure you pva/water coat any printed signs first or the
gloss varnish may cause them to run or wash out !
